Prayers to the Sacred Heart of Jesus

In both the new and old calendars, the Feast of the Sacred Heart of Jesus is celebrated on the Friday after Corpus Christi, which usually falls in June! The earliest the Feast of the Sacred Heart of Jesus can fall is the last week of May.

What the Sacred Heart of Jesus Is and Why It’s Important

A Catholic devotion, the Sacred Heart of Jesus came from visions St. Margaret Mary Aloque had of Jesus Christ in the 1600s. She witnessed Jesus with a burning heart and wanting to pour His love out for all of mankind. After these visions, she wrote about them and mentioned them to her spiritual director, but they were only publicly discovered and confirmed after her death.

The Sacred Heart of Jesus is depicted as a heart burning for love of us. In the saint’s visions, Jesus Christ reveals His heart pouring out endless love for all of mankind. The heart is often depicted with a crown of thorns and occasionally a sword piercing its side and blood dripping out for the blood He shed for us.

Don’t confuse the Sacred Heart imagery from the other hearts of the Holy Family. His mother’s heart, also known as the Immaculate Heart of Mary (shown with white roses and a sword) and the Most Chaste Heart of Joseph (depicted with white lilies) are part of the hearts of the Holy Family.

Celebrating Catholic June Feast Days

Traditional Catholics are known to celebrate the Sacred Heart of Jesus not only as a Feast Day once a year, but also as an observance for the entire month of June. Traditionally each month of the year has a dedication, and June’s devotion is to the Sacred Heart of Jesus.

While the Feast of the Sacred Heart of Jesus is celebrated the Friday after Corpus Christi, other notable Catholic feast days to enjoy in June include the Nativity of Saint John the Baptist (June 24th), the Feast of Saint Anthony of Padua (June 13th), St. Basil the Great (June 14th), Sts. John Fisher and Thomas More (June 22nd), and Sts. Peter and Paul (June 29th).

#1 – Pray the Rosary to the Sacred Heart of Jesus

Pray the Rosary for reparation to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. In order to make a reparation, one would dedicate an act of sacrifice or a certain prayer to make amends for the sinfulness of man. In this case, the rosary would be the prayer of reparation.

In reparation to Jesus Christ, we return our love to Him for satisfaction of the sins of all the people who reject His love and His sacrifice on the Holy Cross.

#2 – Say the Chaplet of the Sacred Heart of Jesus

Use special chaplet beads to pray the chaplet of the Sacred Heart of Jesus:

Holding the Crucifix, say:

Soul of Christ, sanctify me.

Body of Christ, save me.

Blood of Christ, inebriate me.

Water from the side of Christ, wash me.

Passion of Christ, strengthen me.

O good Jesus, hear me.

Within your wounds, hide me.

Permit me not be separated from You.

From the malignant enemy, defend me.

At the hour of death, call me

And bid me come to You

That with Your saints,

I may praise You forever and ever.

Amen

Continue on the chaplet beads:

One Red Bead, Three White Beads, and One Red Bead:

White bead, say:

Sacred Heart of Jesus, I implore that I may love You more and more.

Red bead, say:

Sacred Heart of Jesus, I trust in You!

Repeat the following pattern five times:

Six red beads, and one white bead. Plus “Sacred Heart of Jesus, be my salvation!”

To close, say:

May the Heart of Jesus in the Most Blessed Sacrament be praised, adored and loved with grateful affection at every moment in all the tabernacles of the world even to the end of time.

Amen
